Broadwater Conservation District wants to attract more beneficial pollinators to our county, but we NEED YOUR HELP! We are seeking interested landowners who would like to participate in our pollinator initiative. You can receive FREE POLLINATOR SEED for plots up to 2,500 square feet!
The pollinator initiative was created by the Lake County Conservation District located in Ronan, MT and has been adopted by other Conservation District’s across the state! Montana’s Conservation Districts are motivated to protect pollinator species by increasing the amount of pollinator habitat in your backyard! We offer pollinator-friendly seed mixes complete with beautiful flower species designed specifically for Broadwater County.
Pollinators are vital in supporting our economy, environment, and food production. They play a vital role in the production of healthy crops for food, fibers, edible oils, medicines, and other products. Pollinators provide pollination services to over 180,000 different plant species! Pollinator populations are changing and many pollinator populations are in decline due to a loss in feeding and nesting habitats. The misuse of pesticides, disease, and changes in climatic patterns are all contributors to shrinking and shifting pollinator populations.
There are many advantages to planting and maintaining a pollinator plot, whether you are a producer or a homeowner:
- Increase yields and produce higher quality crops
- Support biodiversity
- Grow beautiful flowers
- Help control unwanted insects
- Attract colorful birds and butterflies
To participate in the program the Conservation District will work with landowners to:
- Select an appropriate site
- Provide guidance on site preparation
- Optimize timing of planting
- Determine maintenance needs
- Assist with plot monitoring
The success of any new seeding is largely dependent upon the condition of the seedbed into which it is seeded. A clean, weed-free seedbed is critical for optimizing success.
